300 Union St., Saint John, NB
The twelve storey office building is the main office for J.D. Irving Ltd. as well as other Irving companies.
J.W. Cowie Engineering Limited provided the consulting structural engineering services to the architectural firm of Dumaresq & Byrne Ltd. of Halifax. The structural support system for the building consisted of a moment resisting space frame of steel construction. The steel framing supports all gravity loading as well as resists the lateral loading due to wind and earthquake. The steel columns are supported by deep reinforced precast concrete columns driven to bedrock. The floor system consists of steel beams in composite action with the concrete topped steel floor deck by the installation of "Nelson" studs welded to the top flange of the floor beams.
The building was constructed in two phases. Phase I consisted of a nine storey building that was completed in 1981. (See attached photographs; 1 to 3). Phase II included adding three floors with the construction completed in 1988. (See photographs; 4 to 7).
